                  What is a Developmental Disability?

 

The term “Developmental Disability” means a severe, chronic disability of a person which:

·         Is attributable to a mental or physical impairment or a combination of mental and physical impairments

·         Is manifested before the person attains age 22

·         Is likely to continue indefinitely

·         Reflects the person’s need for a combination and sequence of special services, individually planned and coordinated

·         Results in substantial functional limitations in major life activities.

Examples of developmental disabilities:

·         Autism

·         Behavior Disorders

·         Brain Injury

·         Cerebral Palsy

·         Down Syndrome

·         Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

·         Mental Retardation

·         Spina Bifida

·         Epilepsy

·         Dyslexia

Nia Comprehensive Center for Developmental Disabilities, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization which was chartered in 1977.  

We are CARF accredited through the years 2011 - 2014 
for the following services:

  • Family Service Children & Adolescences
  • Respite (In-Home Care)

SERVICE AREA    

Individuals are eliigible to apply for service who reside between Kinzie Avenue (north) and south to city limits; and the Dan Ryan Expressway (east) and west to the city limits (Narragansett).

Some Nia programs has boundaries within this large area.  Eligibility by residence will be determined at intake.

Appropriate referrals will be made for individuals outside the program area.

OBJECTIVE

To continually assess and research the changing need and issues of the developmentally disabled population.

To prevent institutional placement whenever possible.

To provide support systems to meet the needs of the individual with developmental disabilities.

To serve as a link and referral source between individuals with developmental disabilities and existing programs and services available through various agencies serving individuals with developmental disabilities.

To serve as a training center for professionals interested in careers serving the developmentally disabled.

To build a resource library of current literature and research pertinent to developmental disabilities.

To identify potential delays in preschool children and prevent poor academic achievement later in life through intervention.
