Mission


Nia Comprehensive Center for Developmental Disabilities, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization, which was chartered in 1977.
Nia’s purpose is to rebuild the community of the developmentally disabled to allow the individual to reach maximum potential and become a productive contributor to society and to him/herself.
The term “developmental disability” means a severe, chronic disability a person which:
Is attributable to a mental or physical impairment or a combination of the two;
Is manifested before the person attains age 22;
Is likely to continue indefinitely;
Reflects the person’s need for a combination and sequence of specialized services, individually planned and coordinated and;
Results in substantial functional limitations in major life activities.

Objectives

To continually assess and research the changing needs and issues of the individual who is developmentally disabled, as an agency of the 2000s.
To prevent institutional placement whenever possible.
To provide support systems to meet the needs of the individual.
To serve as a linkage and referral source for individuals with developmental disabilities to existing programs and services available through other agencies.
To serve as a training center for those professionals interested in careers servicing this specialized population.
To continue to build a resource library of current literature and research pertinent to developmentally disabilities.
To identify potential delays in preschool children and through intervention, prevent poor academic achievement later in life.
Nia’s continued development is the result of collective and tireless efforts of a dedicated staff, Board of Directors and concerned members of the community.
